Key Dates for Initial Certification

2010 July 1 - September 30 Registration begins for all PGY2 residents.
2010 September 9 Initial Qualification Computer-based exam administered at Pearson VUE testing centers: Physics.
2010 September 10 Initial Qualification Computer-based exam administered at Pearson VUE testing centers: Clinical.
2010 October Initial Qualification Computer-based exam results mailed.
2010 November
7 - 8
Oral conditioned exam, for those who failed one-three categories, at Louisville, KY.

If your residency start date is PRIOR TO July 1, 2010

Registration Process

Your program director or coordinator has already submitted your name and email address to the ABR as a new resident in the training program.

The ABR sent you notification with information for logging on to your personal database (PDB) to begin the registration process. If you no longer have that email or have additional questions, please contact the ABR Office.

If you have not already registered:

Annual invoice is sent in July of each year.

Registration Form Fees

The following table shows the fee that should be submitted with the registration form, based on the residency year in which the form is submitted.

You will be billed as necessary.

If your residency start date is ON OR AFTER July 1, 2010

Registration Process

Your program director or coordinator will submit your name and email address to the ABR as a new resident in the training program.

The ABR will send you a notification and information for logging in to your personal database (PDB) to begin the registration process.

If you have not already registered:

Immediately following approval notification, you will be sent your first annual invoice for $589. Please note that this fee is not refundable and will be higher if you do not register in PGY2.

Annual Fee

Subsequent annual invoices will be sent in January each year for the next four years (total of five fees due), and the amount is subject to adjustment by the ABR each year.

Annual fee is due February 15 of each year.

The following tables show additional fees that may apply.

Initial Qualification Exam Cancellation Fee Cancelled appointment after registering for testing site and scheduling exam. $400
Initial Qualification Exam No-Show Fee Did not appear for exam after registering with Pearson VUE for testing site and scheduling exam. $2945
Oral Exam Cancellation Fee, up to 20 days before exam Cancelled oral exam up to 20 days before exam. You will be notified if you need to pay this. $400
Oral Exam Cancellation Fee, 19 days or less before exam Cancelled oral exam 19 days or less before exam. You will be notified if you need to pay this. $2945

Re-registration Fee Previous registration form has expired, and you are submitting a new registration form. $1945
Re-exam fee If you fail an exam, re-exam fee is assessed and you are placed in the next year's exam. $750

Anyone who does reapply for an examination may submit that registration at any time. However, for a candidate to be considered for an exam in any given year, the re-registration form must be submitted to the ABR with payment before December 15.

Any candidate whose form arrives after December 15 will be eligible for the exam in two years. (e.g., registraton forms received after December 15, 2010 are eligible for examinations occurring in 2012.)

Payment may be made by check, VISA™ or MasterCard™ only (U.S. currency). If your payment is declined for any reason, there will be a $100 processing fee.
