Radiation Oncology

Conditions & Reregistration

You have three opportunities to appear for and pass any examination. Failure to accept an appointment, cancellation of an appointment, or failure to appear for a scheduled examination will be regarded as one of the three opportunities. If you fail the exam or fail to appear as noted, you must submit a new registration, pay the fee, and retake examination. You will be notified by the ABR if you need to reapply.

Computer-based Examination
Failures/Missed Opportunities
You may choose to take the Physics and Cancer Biology portions of the written exam after 36 months of training in radiation oncology, but taking the exams is not required until the fourth year. If you take these exams before the fourth year of residency and pass only one, you will be required to repeat the one you did not pass.

In the fourth year of residency and beyond, you have three opportunities to appear for and pass the examinations (see above).

Conditions:
If you fail one or two portions of the computer-based exam, you will be considered to have "conditioned" that exam. You will have three consecutive opportunities to appear for and pass the examination. If, after three opportunities, you fail to pass the examination, you must submit a new registration, pay the fee, and retake all of the computer-based examinations. You will be notified if you need to do this.

Oral Examination
Failures/Missed Opportunities:
For the oral exam, if you pass five or fewer categories, you have failed the examination. A candidate who fails the oral examination may be reexamined on the next year's scheduled dates.

Conditions:
If you fail one or two categories, you are considered to have "conditioned" the exam. You will have three consecutive opportunities to be reexamined in the conditioned category(ies).

A condition candidate will be examined by two examiners in the conditioned category. The candidate must receive passing scores from both of these examiners to remove the condition.

If, after three opportunities, you fail to erase the conditions, you must submit a new registration, pay the fee, repeat the entire oral examination at the next appointment. You will be notified if you need to do this.
